The Sixth Sense of a Resilient Mindset

The Sixth Sense of a Resilient Mindset

In our recent series, we established the Blissful Getaway as Paradigm 1 of a Great Outdoor Adventure: the choice to seek restoration in the wild. Our last Blog introduced its corollary, Sanctuary’s Hidden Dangers. Now we begin looking more closely at the reality checks posed by the Great Outdoors' Triple Threat of Inherent Dangers.

The choice to venture outdoors for restoration must be paired with a safety plan for the entire crew. We cannot short-change safety and expect the sanctuary we sought to remain intact for our enjoyment.

That plan begins with a Resilient Mindset. We recommend it as the FIRST tool “packed out” for any outdoor adventure. Our intuition may become one of our most critical assets once we leave home, but only if we prepare ourselves to listen to it.

We are born with an intuition, a “sixth sense” that alerts us when our surroundings change. Yet stepping away from the familiar comforts of a vacay and into the wilderness demands more than waiting for that feeling to sound the alarm. A Resilient Mindset builds upon it. We learn what is known about our chosen destination before we go, and we let that knowledge shape our plan. If the area is known for bears, we account for that reality before stepping off the pavement, not after we spot one among the trees.

This is the moment to see not only the forest, but the signs of the forest we have chosen to enter. Before reaching for bags and boxes filled with bandages, tents, a blade, or a fire-starter, we must recognize that safety out there is our responsibility. The sanctuary of the Great Outdoors may be a necessity for the soul, but the stakes are real, and the wilderness remains indifferent to our presence.

A maturing Resilient Mindset acknowledges the inherent dangers of an off-grid setting. Doing so does not ruin the experience; it helps secure it. This is how we move from being a “tourist” in nature to becoming a ruggedly prepared participant in it.

The Necessary First Step

Before building or enhancing a physical Outdoor Adventure Kit, we must bridge a mental gap: the distance between a familiar vacation mindset and a resilience-based approach to venturing outdoors. We will explore ways to sharpen that internal toolkit as this series continues. Today, the work begins within.

Three Takeaways for Today

Acknowledge the Wild’s Indifference. The wilderness offers no “timeouts.” Pay attention to changes in your surroundings, but do not rely on intuition alone. Learn what to watch for at your destination and plan for known challenges before they confront you.

Include a Resilient Mindset in Pre-Journey Planning. Research the place you intend to visit. Consider conditions and potential dangers there, along with needs of everyone making the journey.

Let a Resilient Mindset Guide Gear Prep. Even the best equipment is secondary to the judgment of the person carrying and using it. Pre-think each item: why is it coming, what challenge might it help address, and what other field utility could it offer?

Where We Will Go Next

A Resilient Mindset is the first tool we pack, but it is not the last step in our plan. In the next three blogs, we’ll put that mindset to work against that Triple Threat of Inherent Dangers: The Connectivity Gap; Our Outdoor Neighbors; and Handling Remote Emergencies. Each asks us to learn something about our destination, make decisions before we leave, and prepare to respond if the journey changes.

Let’s begin the pre-journey task of Being Ruggedly Prepared.
